{"id":5836,"date":"2020-05-04T14:04:35","date_gmt":"2020-05-04T14:04:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brohyddgen.cymru\/?p=5836"},"modified":"2026-08-19T10:03:43","modified_gmt":"2026-08-19T10:03:43","slug":"devices-to-be-provided-to-digitally-excluded-learners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.brohyddgen.cymru\/index.php\/2020\/05\/04\/devices-to-be-provided-to-digitally-excluded-learners\/","title":{"rendered":"Devices to be provided to digitally excluded learners"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"et_pb_section_0 et_pb_section et_section_regular et_block_section\"><div class=\"et_pb_row_0 et_pb_row et_block_row\"><div class=\"et_pb_column_0 et_pb_column et_pb_column_4_4 et-last-child et_block_column et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode_passthrough\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_0 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><p><span style=\"font-size: 24pt;\"><strong>Devices to be provided to digitally excluded learners<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Learners in Powys who do not have access to an internet-connected device at home will be provided with one during the coronavirus pandemic, the county council has said.<\/p>\n<p>Powys County Council has worked with schools across the county to identify digitally excluded learners and support their families who do not have suitable devices or wi-fi.<\/p>\n<p>A \u2018digitally excluded\u2019 learner is defined as a student who does not have access to an appropriate internet-connected device to participate in online learning activities from home.<\/p>\n<p>From today (Monday, May 4), pupils will be provided with a device so that they can continue their education at home. Parents will be provided with a day and time by their cluster high school for when they will be able to collect a repurposed school device.<\/p>\n<p>The council has also requested 500 4G MiFi connectivity devices from the Welsh Government, which will be provided to families that do not have wi-fi at home when they become available.<\/p>\n<p>Cllr Phyl Davies, Cabinet Member for Education and Property, said: \u201cThis is a unique and challenging time for everyone, particularly our children and young people whose lives have changed drastically following the closure of schools.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe coronavirus pandemic has made learning from home necessary but we recognise that this presents challenges for many families across the county. We\u2019ve identified a number of families who do not have access to a device at home or wi-fi and it\u2019s important that we support these families by providing them with these devices that allows pupils to continue their education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven the rural nature of our county, not everywhere will have a 4G signal. We appreciate that this may be an issue for families who live in the county where there is no 4G signal and may have to travel to a suitable, safe and local location that has a 4G signal to download schoolwork for their child to complete at home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose families who feel that this is not possible, they should contact their school to discuss the best way to provide schoolwork for their child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cllr Joy Jones, the council\u2019s Anti-Poverty Champion, said: \u201cThere are many families in Powys who do not have a laptop or tablet or a wi-fi connection at home.
